How to Ripen Them Quickly at the End of the Season.

Fortunately, there are simple and effective tips for ripening them at the end of the season.

Because with the cold and the drop in sunshine, they mature less quickly.

It was my grandfather, a market gardener, who explained to me how to save the last tomatoes in September-October before pulling out the vines.

Here is my 4 solutions to ripen green tomatoes quickly. Look :

1. Use a banana to ripen vine tomatoes

Are your tomatoes already a good size?

But they stay green?

Fortunately, there is a trick to make them blush quickly.

I named: the banana.

Funny idea, you say!

Well, not that much.

Because the banana contains ethylene which makes the fruit ripen faster.

By the way, I’m sure you’ve noticed that your fruit ripens faster when there are bananas in the basket.

So, hang 1 or 2 bananas in the tomato base so that they ripen faster.

2. Put the tomatoes in the sun to make them blush

In the fall, the sun in the garden is less hot.

In addition, it is lower and no longer gives as in summer.

Suddenly, tomatoes do not ripen as quickly.

So, when they reach a good size, pick them.

Then, put them on your window in direct sunlight.

In 2 or 3 days, they will be very red and very sweet.

It works with all varieties, even cherry tomatoes.

The important thing is that they are in a sunny place and protected from the cold wind.

3. Use newspaper to stimulate maturation

Wrap each picked or dropped tomato in a sheet of newspaper.

Then place them in a warm room in the house.

In 3 or 4 days, they will be very ripe.

And the best thing is that this trick works even with very green fruits or fruits that are not yet big enough.

4. Use a plastic bag to speed up ripening

Before pulling up the tomato stalks in October, pick the largest fruits.

Then, put them in a transparent plastic bag with a few holes.

Place the bag in a warm place, and wait 1 week to see them redden and ripen.

Why does it work? Because the bag plays the role of a mini-greenhouse to accelerate ripening.

The other trick is to put a banana in the bag.

Since it gives off ethylene, the tomatoes next to it ripen faster.

At the end of the season, some tomatoes will not have time to ripen despite all our tips.

So what can we do to not spoil them?

Well, just jam.

The famous green tomato jam found in England or at our grandmothers’.

It’s so good.

You can even improve the recipe to make it a chutney that we will taste during the end of the year celebrations.
